July 2026 kept Atascocita pest activity running at sustained seasonal highs from start to finish. The area received 5.85 inches of rain across 10 separate events, with the month’s most significant storm hitting July 13–14 — a 3.72-inch combined event that sent drainage rushing toward Lake Houston and left low-lying areas along the lake’s western shore holding standing water for nearly a week. Lake Houston’s 12,000-acre surface and shallow natural margins function as a permanent mosquito breeding infrastructure that intensifies rapidly after any significant mid-summer rain event.
Mosquito pressure in Atascocita remained elevated throughout July, peaking in the 8–10 days after the mid-month storm as the breeding cycle from that standing water reached peak adult emergence. Homes along Atascocita Shores and Timber Forest and subdivisions backing directly up to Lake Houston’s tributary coves saw the highest concentration of activity. Although overall July rainfall in Atascocita came in slightly below July 2025’s total, the concentrated nature of the July 13–14 event — a single large surge rather than rain spread across multiple weeks — produced a more intense short-term mosquito surge than last year’s more distributed pattern. We completed 20 mosquito barrier treatments in the Atascocita area in July.
The July 13–14 flooding event displaced fire ant colonies across maintained lawn and park areas throughout the community. Atascocita’s combination of clay-influenced soil and relatively flat terrain near the lake creates conditions where displaced colonies relocate quickly to elevated ground — driveways, sidewalk edges, and foundation slabs typically show elevated mound counts within 48–72 hours of significant flooding. Fire ant activity in the area is running 15% above the same period last year.
With a peak temperature of 99°F on July 22nd and the heat index pushing above 106°F, German cockroaches moved indoors across the board. General pest control accounted for 44 of our 71 July stops in the Atascocita area, with above-average activity in kitchen, garage, and utility areas throughout the second half of the month.
